At least seven sections force a quotient

The complement of seven or more distinct rational sections always has a cyclic quotient of order two.

Only three rational reduction points are available over $\mathbb F_2$, and normal crossings permits at most two sections through each. Seven sections therefore force a collision that produces a connected double cover, giving an obstruction determined solely by the boundary count. This is the large-boundary case of Corollary 2.7 in Shimizu–Yamaguchi, whose threshold comes from that six-section bound.

Mathematical statement

Let $A\subset\mathbb P^1(\mathbb Q)$ be finite with $|A|\ge7$, and form the open complement $U_A\subset\mathbb P^1_{\mathbb Z}$ of the corresponding integral sections. For every geometric point $\xi$ of $U_A$,

$$\exists\,\phi:\pi_1^{\mathrm{\acute et}}(U_A,\xi)\twoheadrightarrow\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z\quad\text{continuous}.$$
