A Jacobian without a rational base point

A smooth proper geometrically irreducible curve has a fixed descended Jacobian over its original field.

A curve may have no rational point, yet its degree-zero divisor theory still gives rise to a geometric group over the original field. A rational base point is used later to define a normalized map from the curve into that group. Grothendieck's 1962 Bourbaki treatment of Picard schemes explains how relative Picard functors and faithfully flat descent address precisely the difficulty caused by the absence of a rational section.

Mathematical statement

Let $k$ be a field and let $C/k$ be smooth, proper, geometrically irreducible, and of relative dimension $1$. The definition constructs a scheme over $k$, denoted $J_C$, without requiring a point in $C(k)$.

The associated genus is the geometric function-field genus, denoted $g(C)$. The public construction uses finite faithfully flat descent to obtain the fixed object $J_C/k$.
