Finite étale H¹ of a proper curve

The actual first étale cohomology group with roots-of-unity coefficients has the expected genus-dependent cardinality.

Kummer theory connects first étale cohomology with torsion line bundles, and the Jacobian realizes that torsion geometrically. The count $n^{2g}$ therefore links the genus to the size of the curve's finite abelian covering data. SGA 1 established the fundamental-group language for these covers; Milne's Jacobian Varieties, Section 9, develops their relation with the torsion of the Jacobian.

Mathematical statement

Let $K$ be algebraically closed of characteristic $0$, and let $C$ be a geometrically integral smooth proper curve model of $F/K$, equipped with a $K$-point and a geometric point. For $n\ge1$,

$$\#H^1_{\mathrm{\acute et}}(C,\underline{\mu_n(K)})=n^{2g(F/K)}.$$

The coefficient object is the constant étale sheaf on the finite abelian group $\mu_n(K)$.
