The contribution of punctures to H¹

For a nonempty finite boundary, the first étale cohomology count gains r−1 boundary directions.

Each puncture contributes boundary information, while the degree relation ties those contributions together. The exponent $2g+r-1$ separates the roles of genus and boundary in the finite abelian covering theory of a curve. This fits the classical theory of generalized Jacobians, which incorporates boundary conditions into divisor classes; Milne's Sections 8–9 explain how that broader geometry relates to covers of punctured curves.

Mathematical statement

Let $K$ be algebraically closed of characteristic $0$, and let $C$ be a smooth proper curve model of genus $g$ with a $K$-point. Let $j:U\hookrightarrow C$ be a dense open immersion with $U$ integral and quasi-compact. Suppose the boundary has $r\ge1$ places, and choose a geometric point of $U$. Then, for $n\ge1$,

$$\#H^1_{\mathrm{\acute et}}(U,\underline{\mu_n(K)})=n^{\,2g+r-1}.$$
