The pointed Abel–Jacobi morphism

A chosen rational point determines a morphism from the curve to its fixed Jacobian and maps to the identity.

The divisor-class description $Q\mapsto[Q-P]$ explains how differences of points become elements of an abelian group. The morphism connects the curve's geometry with its divisor relations and starts the study of maps to abelian varieties and abelian covers. This is the algebraic counterpart of integration from a base point: Milne's Section 2 relates the two through Abel's theorem and Jacobi inversion.

Mathematical statement

Let $k$ be a field and let $C/k$ be smooth, proper, geometrically irreducible, and of relative dimension $1$. For $P\in C(k)$, the definition gives a $k$-morphism $a_P:C\to J_C$ to the fixed descended Jacobian, the point-minus-basepoint Abel–Jacobi morphism. Its normalization is proved:

$$a_P(P)=0.$$

The motivating divisor-class formula is $Q\mapsto[\mathcal O_C(Q-P)]$; the implementation constructs an actual morphism of schemes over $k$.
