The geometric–arithmetic exact sequence

For a geometrically connected, quasi-compact, quasi-separated scheme over a field, the geometric fundamental group is the kernel of the arithmetic Galois action.

The sequence separates the geometry over separably closed constants from the arithmetic of the base field, while explaining how both enter a single fundamental group. It does not choose a splitting. This geometric–arithmetic viewpoint was developed in SGA 1; purely inseparable invariance relates the separable-closure formulation here to the algebraic-closure formulation in the Stacks Project.

Mathematical statement

Let $k$ be a field, $L$ a separable closure, and $X\to\operatorname{Spec}k$ a quasi-compact, quasi-separated scheme such that $X_L$ is connected. Choose a geometric point $\xi:\operatorname{Spec}\Omega\to X_L$, with $\Omega$ separably closed, and let $x$ be its image in $X$. Then $$1\longrightarrow\pi_1^{\mathrm{et}}(X_L,\xi)\longrightarrow\pi_1^{\mathrm{et}}(X,x)\longrightarrow\operatorname{Gal}(L/k)\longrightarrow1$$ is exact.

The maps are the continuous homomorphisms induced by pullback and the structure morphism. Exactness includes injectivity on the left, surjectivity on the right, and equality of the kernel with the image. No splitting is asserted.
