A genus-zero curve with two punctures

The actual étale fundamental group is the full profinite completion of the integers, with a chosen topological generator supplied by the conclusion.

A single topological generator accounts for the covering theory, as it does for the multiplicative group. This is the boundary before the hyperbolic genus-zero case reached by adding a third puncture. Classically, power maps on the multiplicative group lead to the profinite-integer description; SGA 1's theory of finite étale covers lets the calculation be transported to a genus-zero curve without choosing coordinates in advance.

Mathematical statement

Let $K$ be algebraically closed of characteristic $0$. Let $C/K$ be integral, smooth, proper, and of relative dimension $1$, with a supplied two-affine-open cover for computing coherent cohomology. Suppose $\dim_K H^1(C,\mathcal O_C)=0$. For two distinct closed points $x,y$ and $U=C\setminus\{x,y\}$, every geometric point $\xi$ of $U$ admits

$$e:\pi_1^{\mathrm{\acute et}}(U,\xi)\xrightarrow{\sim}\widehat{\mathbb Z},\qquad \gamma\in\pi_1^{\mathrm{\acute et}}(U,\xi),$$

such that $\gamma$ topologically generates the group and $e(\gamma)=1$. The isomorphism is continuous in both directions.
