Slimness for proper hyperbolic curves

Every open subgroup of the geometric fundamental group of a proper curve of genus at least two has trivial centralizer.

This property, called slimness, controls centralizing symmetries throughout the finite covering theory of the curve. Centralizers also measure ambiguities when fundamental-group maps are considered up to inner automorphism. In the covering framework of SGA 1, it forms part of the setting for anabelian geometry; Mochizuki's 1999 work proves arithmetic reconstruction results over sub-p-adic fields, whereas the theorem here concerns geometric curves over algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero.

Mathematical statement

Let $K$ be algebraically closed of characteristic $0$, let $C$ be a smooth proper curve model of a one-variable function field $F/K$, and assume $g(F/K)\ge2$. For a geometric point $\xi$, put $G=\pi_1^{\mathrm{\acute et}}(C,\xi)$. Then

$$\forall\,H\le G\text{ open},\qquad C_G(H)=\{1\}.$$

This is the library's predicate $\mathrm{IsSlim}(G)$. It quantifies over all open subgroups, including nonnormal ones.
